About this Course

1.75 continuing education credits (general course) available. In this general course, participants will learn about three types of dementia: dementia with Lewy bodies, vascular dementia, and frontotemporal dementia. For each dementia, participants will learn about causes, risk factors, characteristics, symptomology, treatment and how to cope. When people think of dementia, many times the first thing that comes to mind is Alzheimer’s disease. In this general course, participants will learn about other types of dementia-related illnesses, including dementia with Lewy bodies, vascular dementia, and frontotemporal dementia. For each dementia, participants will learn about causes, risk factors, characteristics, symptomology, treatment and how to cope. Lastly, learn how best to support families and respond appropriately to symptoms such as loss of empathy, compulsive behaviors, and anosognosia.   From this course you will learn to:
  • Identify the signs and symptoms of various dementia-related illnesses.
  • Define important differences in diagnosis, prevention, treatment, and assessment of various types of dementia.
  • Utilize strategies to cope with different types of dementia.
  • Explain the impact of varying types of dementia on family members.
  • Apply recommendations on how to best ameliorate symptoms associated with specific dementia types.
  1.75 CE credits available for social workers licensed in an ASWB accredited state, as well as New York State licensed social workers. (Please note: New Jersey is not currently covered under our ASWB accreditation, please check back soon). The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America #1898, is approved as an ACE provider to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE provider approval period: 7/25/2023 – 7/25/2024. Social workers completing this course receive 1.75 general continuing education credits.
